Glass is my Canvas
15th - 22nd June 2012 Artist: Dennis Ozcelik I was born in London in 1974, the first son to Turkish parents who came to London in 1970 in search of a new life. I grew up in and around North London where my parents had their own textile manufacturing business, so i was surrounded by colour and rich textures from an early age. The richness of colour and textures in my life inspired me as a young boy and I was interested in art from an early age. I graduated from Middlesex University with a degree in Art & Design in 2002 and went on to work in the family business indulging in my art in my spare time mainly for my own pleasure or that of family and friends. A change in my private life in 2008 resulted in me spending more time on my artwork and developing the concept of my glasswork. I have chosen this style because of it's uniqueness and the challenge it presents working with such a delicate material. To me the glass represents the fragileness of life and yet like humanity can withstand the tough process of my designs and drawings being etched onto the surface. After being surrounded by so much colour in my early life and works I believe the black and white of the glass etchings give the pieces more depth and expression, creating the light and darkness which befalls everyone’s lives.
