14th - 20th June 2008 Artists: Fio Adamson, Giselle Benavides, Chelsey Browne, Jackie Castellano, Fernando Cestari, Sara Cook, Jaki Cooper, Alex Ewerth, Pamela Furness, Tony Goddard, Josie Graff, Carolina Graterol, Tony Jarman, Yolande Kenny, Nikolay Kozin, Dominic Madden, Ute Panella, Caroline Pick, Agathe Roger, Annie Rouze Blanchet Five years, that’s all they’ve got (in common) Uncommon Ground brings together in one show a mixed group of 20 artists amongst whom is a woman born in the London blitz who found herself flying US troops to Vietnam, a hockey-playing radio-ham from Hamburg, a Venezuelan who shared a room with Fidel Castro, a shoe designer from Stuttgart, a TV Executive who teaches yoga, a Professor of Engineering and a Russian who worked for Mikhail Gorbachev…and more. Uncommon Ground features works of art at the Islington Arts Factory a converted church that has also been a gym - opposite the entrance to Holloway Prison. All the artists have responded to this extraordinary place - its history and location - in their own way, with different pieces of work that are as interesting and varied as their backgrounds. The wide range - from painting to photography to performance - includes an interactive piece tracking the journey each spectator and artist has made to the place, which will grow during the week of the show. The artists are in the fourth year of a five-year fine art degree at Central St Martin’s.
