Dan 12, Jim and Clara 9 (The Trinders!) have been coming to IAF for what feels like forever! They are a fantastic bunch and always a great asset to any art project they get involved in. We love them! Eleanor, our Director of Art and their sometimes teacher had a chat with them about what they get up to here... Jim, Dan and Clara 2016 What do you usually do at IAF? Dan: We usually go to holiday workshops! Jim and Clara go to an art club every Tuesday. What's your favourite thing about IAF? Jim: My favourite thing is the holiday workshops, you make a big project all together over a week. Dan: Yes, I agree, when everything comes together it's very satisfying. Clara: My favourite is Tuesday art club, because you can bring things to show and every time you come you get to do something different for the project! How long have you been coming to IAF? Dan: We have all been coming since we were 4 or 5, and joined ArtStart on a Saturday morning. Tell us what IAF means to you? Clara: It's somewhere to come when you don't have anything else to do. Dan: It's one of the fun things to do over the holiday! Jim: Because we are having building work done at home, an extension, this is a place we can come if we don't have anything to do at home. Who is your favourite Artist/Artwork? Clara: My grandmother Wendy Trinder. Jim: I like the art works that we have done here, my favourite was the Mr Hoppity sculpture from the Easter Workshop, that was the greatest thing I ever did, that was fun! Dan: I agree with Jim, it was Mr Hoppity! Tell us something about IAF that might surprise people. Clara: In December we have an exhibition of everything we have done in the year and the Mayor comes. Hooray! It's that time of year again, MakeArt Exhibition! Our annual celebration of all the art work that our young artists produce throughout the year was as fab as ever. Here are some pictures of the night. The work will be up until the New Year so still plenty of time to check out their hard work!
Last Friday the Winter Pride Art Awards opened in our galleries. It was a fantastic event with music and dance performances and a moving speech from Peter Tatchell. The work is outstanding and will remain up until 29th April - so there is still time to see it. One of the best things about being a Community Hub is that we get to support other fantastic charities in their work. Three very special art charities use our studio to run classes, bringing art to groups that can struggle to access it. We think the work these charities do is phenomenal and we are honoured to give them a home, so we would love to share their work with you... ArtBoxArtbox is a registered charity and social enterprise providing opportunities for artists with learning disabilities to create, exhibit and sell their art. They provide opportunities for the artists to learn about art and develop their skills, while exploring their identity as artists. The workshops have a fun and friendly atmosphere, allowing artists to experience the benefits of creating art together. They use a variety of techniques, such as painting and drawing, print-making, sculpture, collage, mixed media and animation. Their aim is to build a strong and supportive community that brings people together through art. At the workshops, artists can meet other people with learning disabilities, and connect with other people who love art. Painting for Pleasure Thursday 7-9pm £49 per month A relaxed and inspirational painting class designed to help beginners to get started with painting. In these classes our tutors will take you through exercises that help you to develop and build fundamental skills, working towards developing your own artistic style. This is a very popular class so places go quickly! www.theindependentartschool.com Our Children's showcase exhibition is always such a highlight of the Arts Factory year. Just before Christmas the air and our galleries are filled with excitement as we hang all the fantastic creations our young people have worked so hard on. Every year we are completely blown away by the talent and creativity that springs to life as our Director of Art, Eleanor Pearce, curates the show. Today we have been hanging paintings, just a puppet theatre and an 8 foot ceramic tree to go. Its going to look so fab by Friday! This years exhibition is even more special, because not only do we have great work from our outreach projects at Tufnell Park and Hugh Myddleton Primary Schools, but at the opening on Friday there will be an extra special performance of Gothic Gargoyles by our Children's Contemporary Company around the showcase Creepy Castle sculpture. And Islington Mayor Richard Greening will be officially opening the exhibition. It promises to be a great event, but if you can't make it the work will be on show until we close for Christmas on 23rd December
